Young Gen Z scholars express doubts about the worthiness of academic degrees due to increasing concerns over AI impacting job prospects

In a recent survey conducted by the global student housing brand and operator, Yugo, over 7,000 students across nine countries were questioned about their fears and expectations regarding Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its impact on their future careers.

The research, a part of Yugo's Live Your Best Life programme, reveals that 79% of students globally and 78% in the UK express concerns that AI could make human workers redundant. This finding underscores the need for education and support in navigating the AI-driven future.

However, the research also indicates a proactive approach from students. They are seeking out tools, experiences, and accommodation providers that help them prepare for this uncertain future.

The decline in UK entry-level job postings, which have fallen by nearly a third since 2022, further emphasizes the need for such preparation.

Despite these concerns, there is a silver lining. 44% of UK students express excitement about AI's potential benefits, such as improved work/life balance, healthcare, and productivity. This suggests a balanced view of AI's impact among students.

Yugo is addressing this need by focusing on preparing students for life, not just exams. Through its YuPro pillar and Live Your Best Life platform, Yugo offers in-house career support, AI upskilling, mental health programming, and localized events in all its locations worldwide.

The research also shows that Gen Z students are adapting to AI in their studies and work. 59.5% of Gen Z male students and 55% of female students report that AI has improved their work-life balance. Among mature students aged 55-64, 83.3% say AI has made their studies easier.

The research signals a need for the education sector to support students beyond the curriculum. Emily Porter, Global Senior Brand Manager and Head of the Live Your Best Life programme at Yugo, believes this presents an opportunity for the sector to step up and address student concerns about AI's impact on their futures.

The average student debt in the UK is now over £53,000, leading to growing concerns over the value of higher education. This, coupled with the impact of AI, highlights the importance of holistic support for students, like that provided by Yugo.

While the research does not provide specific information on measures taken by education institutions and accommodation providers to support students in an AI-driven future, a related IMF report suggests that institutions might be adopting AI-based educational technologies to enhance teaching and learning outcomes as part of AI preparedness.

For accommodation providers and other stakeholders, the research does not provide direct insights or details about their specific measures or strategies related to AI. However, it is clear that students are seeking providers who care about their whole journey, not just their academic success.

In conclusion, Yugo's research provides valuable insights into the concerns and adaptations of students in the face of AI. It underscores the need for holistic support and AI literacy in education and accommodation sectors.

Technology plays a significant role in the future career development and education-and-self-development of students, as evidenced by the proactive approach that students are taking towards preparing for an AI-driven future. The research also highlights the need for institutions and accommodation providers to adopt strategies and measures that address student concerns about AI's impact, demonstrating a holistic approach to supporting students in a technology-dominated era.
