Unveiling The Admiral Squad: A School District's Strategy for Enhancing Educator Diversity

In an effort to address the underrepresentation of Black males in the teaching profession, the Middletown City Schools in Ohio has established the Admiral Squad. This affinity network, composed of Black men already employed in the district, aims to provide a supportive environment for current employees and inspire future generations of educators.

The lack of Black male role models in the teaching profession has been a deterrent for many young Black males considering a career in education. However, the Admiral Squad's visits to schools aim to demonstrate that success in education is achievable for Black men. Dressed in distinctive purple clothing, the Squad members visit various buildings within the district, some of which may have one or two African-American males working, while others have none.

The purpose of these visits is twofold. Firstly, the Admiral Squad seeks to show students the diverse career pathways open to them. Secondly, they aim to promote diversity within the district and among students, sending a powerful message that Black men can thrive in education.

Several school districts in Ohio, including Columbus City Schools and Cleveland Metropolitan School District, are also taking steps to recruit and retain Black male educators. They understand the importance of promoting diversity within schools to create an inclusive environment for all students.

The Admiral Squad has been instrumental in inspiring three or four of its initial paraprofessional members to consider returning to school. Their ambition is not only to advance in their own careers but also to create a ripple effect, encouraging more Black males to consider teaching as a viable career option.

In addition to inspiring current and future educators, the Admiral Squad also provides a platform for current male employees of colour to gather, share ideas, and support one another. Districts promoting diversity should examine their most underrepresented group and provide a support system for recruitment and retention.

Moreover, Edtech leaders should make schools welcoming to all and be deliberate in their efforts to promote equity. This includes creating intentional spaces for underrepresented groups to collaborate, share common experiences, and grow.

Finally, it's worth noting that the Middletown City Schools' mascot is inspired by midshipmen from the Navy. The Admiral Squad was named to signify high rank and prestige, reflecting the ambition and aspirations of its members.

In these challenging times, with remote learning becoming increasingly prevalent, a director of technology should work to keep students connected. However, the work of the Admiral Squad extends beyond the digital realm, striving to create a more inclusive and diverse teaching profession in Middletown City Schools.
