Hellgate High School Introduces Academic Service Center to Boost Student Success

Hellgate High School has introduced a new resource for students – the Academic Service Center (ASC). Located on the second floor of the old-library, down the hall from student services, the ASC is easily accessible for students seeking academic assistance.

The ASC is in its inaugural year and aims to make a significant impact on student success. The success of the ASC will be measured by improvements in dropout rates, engagement in school, and attendance. The long-term dream for the ASC is an experiential-learning-based cocurriculum, but the immediate goal is to improve these key metrics.

Britt Hanford, assistant principal at Hellgate High School, emphasized that the idea for the ASC started with the need to find "magic people" to support students. She stated, "We wanted to find those individuals who could truly make a difference in the lives of our students."

The ASC is designed to work with students on an individualized basis to address academic struggles or avoidance of classes. It differs from other academic student assistance programs at Hellgate High School because it aims to address issues before they become irreversible.

The ASC has two "content interventionists" who work with students: Simon Hill (covering science and math concepts) and Astrea Steen (covering English and history). Hill, one of the content interventionists, stated that the ASC is proactive, addressing issues before they become irreversible.

The Credit Recovery Lab is a new resource within the ASC. It is intended for students to earn credits they didn't get in other classrooms, helping them stay on track for graduation. The ASC provides a space for students to receive personalized academic support at any time during the day.

The creation of the ASC was made possible with additional 'Title l' funding from the federal government. COVID-19 has significantly impacted the learning process for students, and teachers have had to adapt to provide different assistance and structure. The ASC is designed to meet these new challenges and help students navigate their learning journey more successfully.

Hanford emphasized that the ASC aims to help students who may be struggling alone and in silence, and that it's not the students' fault. She stated, "We want to create a space where students feel supported and encouraged, where they can learn and grow without fear of judgment or failure."

The ASC is designed to make education less menial and more meaningful for students, focusing on strengths rather than weaknesses. It's a beacon of hope for students who may be struggling, offering them the tools and encouragement they need to become more self-sufficient.

In summary, the Academic Service Center at Hellgate High School is a new resource for students seeking academic support. It aims to improve key metrics such as dropout rates, engagement in school, and attendance, and offers personalized academic support for students struggling in their studies. The ASC is a proactive approach to student success, addressing issues before they become irreversible.
