Unsure about Australia's Childcare Subsidy System?

The Australian government has announced significant changes to the Child Care Subsidy (CCS), making early education and childcare more affordable for a broader range of families. The CCS is a government payment that helps families with the cost of approved childcare services, including long day care, family day care, outside school hours care, and occasional care.

### How the Child Care Subsidy Works

The amount a family receives depends on several factors, including their combined income, the hours of activity (work, study, or training) of the parents or guardians, and the type of childcare service used. To qualify, a family must care for a child aged 13 years or younger (who is not attending secondary school), use an approved childcare service, be responsible for paying childcare fees directly, have care responsibility for the child (at least 2 nights per fortnight or 14% care responsibility), and meet residency requirements.

### Factors Affecting the Amount Received

The percentage of subsidy decreases as family income increases. Families earning $80,000 or less will receive the maximum subsidy of 90% starting from July 2023, increasing slightly to include families earning up to $85,279 in 2025. For families earning between $80,000 (or $85,279) and approximately $530,000 (rising to $535,279 in 2025), the subsidy reduces by 1% for every additional $5,000 earned beyond those thresholds. Families earning above approximately $530,000 to $535,000 are not eligible for CCS.

The subsidy also depends on the number of hours a parent or guardian engages in work, training, study, or other recognised activities, which determines the hours of child care covered.

### Recent Changes Announced for 2023 and Beyond

Starting from July 10, 2023, the income limit for receiving any subsidy increased from $356,756 to $530,000. The threshold family income for the maximum subsidy increased from $72,000 to $80,000, with the maximum subsidy rate rising from 85% to 90%. Families earning over $80,000 may now get a subsidy starting at 90%, reducing by 1% for every $5,000 earned above $80,000.

From July 7, 2025, the maximum subsidy income threshold will rise again to $85,279. The income limit for receiving any subsidy will be $535,279. The subsidy scale adjusts accordingly, maintaining the 1% reduction per $5,000 income increase between the thresholds. The government plans to introduce a new, more accessible Child Care scheme in early 2026.

Families must confirm their income annually to continue receiving CCS. If income is not confirmed, subsidies stop and families must pay childcare fees in full until confirmation and re-eligibility are established.

These changes aim to make childcare more affordable and accessible for a broader range of families by increasing income thresholds and subsidy rates. The government's goal is to reduce childcare costs and support families with diverse incomes and needs.

For more information and to check eligibility, families can start the application process early through the myGov platform, requiring details of income, the child involved, and the chosen childcare services. It's essential to ensure that your Centrelink account is linked and updated to avoid delays in processing the CCS application.

Early education benefits children, and with the government's support, it's now more affordable than ever.

In light of the recent changes, the Australian government's Child Care Subsidy (CCS) now offers more financial assistance for business expenses related to early education and childcare for a wider spectrum of families. To take advantage of this, families need to confirm their income annually and provide relevant details through the myGov platform, ensuring their Centrelink account is linked and updated for a smooth application process.

The CCS program encourages education-and-self-development activities, as families with increased income can now receive a higher subsidy rate of 90% for their early education and childcare costs, making it more affordable to engage in work, study, or training.
