University of Waterloo Appoints Dr. Edith Law as Google Chair in Future of Work and Learning

The University of Waterloo has appointed Dr. Edith Law as the inaugural Google Chair in the Future of Work and Learning. This significant appointment comes as part of a strategic partnership between the university and Facebook, aiming to explore the role of AI in shaping the future of learning and work readiness.

The author, an alumnus of the University of Waterloo, has firsthand experience with the institution's innovative approach to learning, which emphasizes hands-on, experiential education. This new partnership, which includes a $1 million CAD contribution from Facebook, will establish a new Facebook Chair in the Future of Work and Learning, held by Professor Edith Law, an esteemed Computer Science professor and Executive Director of the University of Waterloo's Future of Work Institute.

The centerpiece of this collaboration is the Futures Lab: An AI Prototyping Workshop. This workshop, kicking off on October 6, will engage students in co-developing cutting-edge prototypes and receiving direct feedback. The author, currently part of the Technology & Society team, imagines, co-creates, and prototypes ambitious technologies in collaboration with industry trailblazers, echoing the spirit of this new initiative. Facebook has a history of working with the University of Waterloo, including co-creating the Kids on Campus program and supporting the Women in Computer Science (WiCS) program.

The appointment of Dr. Edith Law as the Google Chair and the establishment of the Facebook Chair at the University of Waterloo signal a commitment to exploring the future of work and learning through AI.
