University of Osnabrück's President Menzel-Riedl commences her second term.
University of Osnabrück's President Susanne Menzel-Riedl Secures Funding and Praise for Her Leadership
The University of Osnabrück, under the leadership of President Susanne Menzel-Riedl, has made significant strides in research and development. Menzel-Riedl, who was appointed as the President in 2019 and reappointed for a second term starting October 1, has been instrumental in securing substantial funding for the university.
Two Collaborative Research Centres have been successfully acquired, and the KI-Reallabor Agrar (RLA) has been established, funded with 18.9 million euros by the Volkswagen Foundation. The implementation of the goals in the funding program "Developing Potentials Strategically" will provide the university with an additional 16.25 million euros.
Menzel-Riedl's plans for the university include a key focus on the goals outlined in the funding program. These plans aim to further strengthen the university's research capabilities and visibility.
Lower Saxony's Minister of Science, Falko Mohrs, has praised Menzel-Riedl's leadership and the university's gains in research strength and visibility. Mohrs expressed his confidence in Menzel-Riedl's ability to continue the successful development of the University of Osnabrück in her second term, which is scheduled for eight years.
Menzel-Riedl's commitment to the well-being of students is evident in her aim to make the campus a discursive meeting point for students. She also intends to integrate newly appointed professors more strongly into the university and its scientific landscape.
Menzel-Riedl has set decisive impulses for the internationalization and further profiling of the university in research during her first term. Her efforts have not gone unnoticed; in the 2025 election for "Rector of the Year" by the German Academic Association (DHV), Menzel-Riedl came in second place. Since 2021, she has consistently ranked first among Lower Saxony university leaders in the election for "Rector of the Year".

Menzel-Riedl's journey with the University of Osnabrück began in 2008 when she was appointed as a junior professor. Her determination and dedication have led her to become the youngest university president in Germany and the chair of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Conference. Her re-election was unanimously proposed by the Senate and University Council and approved by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture.
Menzel-Riedl's leadership and achievements have not only benefited the University of Osnabrück but also the wider academic community. Her focus on research, student well-being, and internationalization will undoubtedly continue to drive the university's success in the years to come.
