University of Oregon Faces Title IX Lawsuit Over Gender Discrimination in Athletics
The University of Washington is facing a Title IX lawsuit from past and current female athletes on the women's varsity beach volleyball and club rowing teams. The plaintiffs claim gender-based discrimination in athletic opportunities, resources, and support.
The beach volleyball plaintiffs argue that despite women making up over 49% of varsity athletes, they receive only 25% of total athletic expenditures and 15% of recruiting expenditures. They point to disparities in facilities, equipment, scheduling, and medical services between their team and the men's football team. The rowing plaintiffs allege that the university refuses to support a women's varsity rowing team despite interest, ability, and competition availability. Both teams claim that male varsity student-athletes enjoy better treatment, benefits, and opportunities. The plaintiffs brought their claims under Title IX, which mandates equal athletic opportunities and proportional scholarships based on participation numbers. They seek a court declaration of discrimination, an injunction to prevent further discrimination, and monetary damages for their loss. The university needs to add at least 94 female student-athletes to its varsity athletic program to comply with Title IX's proportionality requirement.
The University of Washington must address the allegations of gender-based discrimination in its athletic program. The court will determine if the university has violated Title IX and decide the appropriate remedies.
