University awards Dr. Lisa Chapman with the title of 2016-17 University Faculty Scholar
Associate Professor Dr. Lisa Chapman Honored as University Faculty Scholar
Dr. Lisa Chapman, an associate professor in the Textile and Apparel, Technology and Management (TATM) department at North Carolina State University's Wilson College of Textiles, has been honored as a 2016-17 University Faculty Scholar by Chancellor Randy Woodson. This recognition and reward program is part of the university's strategic initiative to invest in and retain top faculty members.
Dean David Hinks praised Dr. Chapman, stating, "One needs only to review Dr. Chapman's accomplishments to understand that she is truly deserving of this recognition. She is an outstanding faculty member who has distinguished herself in teaching, research, and industry partnerships."
Dr. Chapman's teaching and research span the disciplines of design and technology, enabling her to bridge the gap between art and science in both teaching and research. Her research focuses on utilizing advanced digital design tools to streamline the design process and bridge the communication gap between product development and manufacturing. This work has earned her a reputation as a key leader in the field of textile design and technology.
Dr. Chapman's research has led to numerous competitive grants, totaling over $1 million, supporting product design and development research in digital printing, integral knitting, and sustainable design. Her work is helping to fuel the renewed growth in U.S. textile manufacturing and processing and supporting localized production.
Dr. Chapman attributes her success to her years of experience with digital printing and her ability to translate complex information into easily understandable concepts. She has integrated digital technologies into her teaching and research, developing computer-aided design learning modules, securing and implementing digital technologies, and creating digital design classrooms and research laboratories. These facilities benefit over 200 students and many faculty members each semester and attract up to 50 new companies annually.
Dr. Chapman's teaching philosophy emphasizes using digital technologies to teach, demonstrate, and reinforce creative problem solving, design principles, and textile fundamentals. She teaches in three bachelor's of science degree programs—Fashion and Textile Design, Fashion and Textile Management, and Textile Technology—in various classroom settings, including lectures, studios, and labs.
Throughout her career, Dr. Chapman has been dedicated to student learning and mentorship. She has mentored numerous master's and doctoral students and has received numerous awards in design competitions under her guidance. In addition to her academic accomplishments, Dr. Chapman shares her expertise in digital design technology and product development globally, speaking at events in Hong Kong, Egypt, Italy, Japan, Korea, China, France, Peru, and other locations. She also supports NC State students through service projects, open houses, and the College's Summer Textile Exploration Program.
Established by Chancellor Randy Woodson in 2012, the University Faculty Scholars Program recognizes and rewards emerging academic leaders who translate research into solutions for society's most pressing issues. Each year, approximately twenty tenured or tenure-track faculty members are selected for this honor. Dr. Chapman will carry the title for a five-year period and receive a $10,000 annual supplement to support her academic endeavors.
Previous winners from the Wilson College of Textiles include Ahmed El-Shafei, Renzo Shamey, Melissa Pasquinelli, and an unnamed professor of Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science. For more on this year's class of University Faculty Scholars, click here.
