University Attendee Discusses Dress Code: Shorts Worn by Saja Nurbek at Institutions

In a recent development, Minister of Science and Higher Education Sayasat Nurbek has shared his thoughts on the appropriate attire for students in Kazakhstan's higher education institutions. However, no concrete information has been provided about the outcome of the clarification regarding the university's dress code requirements.

During a meeting at the Kazakh National Pedagogical University named after Abai in May, first-year female students were given advice on societal behaviour and interactions with men. This advice included suggestions about appropriate clothing, speaking volume, and greeting etiquette with men. A video was shown during the meeting, featuring men of different ages discussing appropriate behaviour for young women in society. In the video, a group of girls in shorts tried to enter the university, but the security guards refused them, citing their inappropriate appearance.

Minister Nurbek acknowledged that universities can set their own standards for student attire, but no strict requirements exist. He also stated that the university's dress code requirements will be clarified in due course. However, as of now, no official statements or guidelines related to this topic by Sayasat Nurbek or any relevant Kazakhstani authority have been found.

Interestingly, the minister himself wore shorts while studying in the US and encountered similar reactions upon returning to Kazakhstan. He expressed his opinion that inappropriate actions of the security guard in commenting on the students' appearance should be addressed.

Journalists asked the Minister of Science and Higher Education if there are specific requirements for student attire and if universities can independently set such rules. Minister Nurbek did not express any opinion on the appropriateness of the video shown during the May meeting at KazNU. He also did not comment on the specific advice given during the meeting regarding societal behaviour and interactions with men.

The minister plans to provide more detailed information about the situation at a later time. Until then, the search for specific dress code requirements for Kazakhstani higher education students continues. Additional or direct sources from Kazakhstani education authorities would be needed to answer this query fully and accurately.
