"Unemployment Training Program"
In the heart of Krefeld, Germany, the Learning Workshop, run by the municipal psychological service, is making a significant difference in the lives of children struggling with learning disabilities. This municipal offer, supplemented by 22 honorary workers, has been providing individual, positive, and fun support to children for many years.
The Learning Workshop primarily caters to primary school students, but secondary school students also receive help. Two common learning disabilities encountered among children are Dyscalculia, a learning disability related to difficulties in understanding numbers and quantities, and Reading-Writing Weakness (RWS), which causes difficulties in creating meaningful word images and stringing together letters. These disabilities can cause significant frustration and affect a child's self-image.
Birgit Ogger coordinates and organizes the work of the Learning Workshop for the psychological service. Carola Brink and Uschi Hass, each occupying a half-time position, are two of the five permanent employees of the Krefeld Learning Workshop.
The Learning Workshop is always looking for new honorary workers to join its dedicated team. The support association, led by Ingolf Meinhardt, takes care of the payment of the honorary workers. More information about the support association, including membership and donations, can be found on www.foerderverein-lernwerkstatt-krefeld.de.
The Learning Workshop's waiting list is consistently long, despite the high number of students it supports. To address this, the Learning Workshop provides support lessons in the mornings at 15 Krefeld primary schools. Additionally, other honorary workers of the Learning Workshop are active in the afternoons at two locations of the city administration.
A unique feature of the Learning Workshop is a large foam cube with the first twelve numbers depicted. This interactive tool helps children understand numbers in a fun and engaging way.
Schools and parents can refer students to the Learning Workshop, or parents can contact the psychological service directly at 0 21 51 / 3 63 26 70 for more information. The Learning Workshop is an integral part of educational counseling and plays a crucial role in helping children overcome their learning disabilities and reach their full potential.
