UN CSW70: 30 Years After Beijing, Women's Rights Still Need Progress

The 70th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70) concluded recently, reviewing the progress made on gender equality and women's rights since the Beijing Declaration was adopted 30 years ago. The event, known as CSW69/Beijing+30, highlighted ongoing challenges and disparities faced by women and girls worldwide.

The Beijing Declaration, adopted in 1995, promotes gender equality and women's rights across 12 critical areas. However, nearly 130 million girls remain out of school, and women are paid approximately 80% of what men earn for the same work. CSW69/Beijing+30 reviewed the implementation of these principles, acknowledging the persistent issues of gender-based violence, wage gaps, economic barriers, and lack of access to education and healthcare.

Women and girls of color and LGBTQ+ women are disproportionately affected by these challenges. In the United States alone, more than 1.5 million Native American women have experienced violence, and over half have faced sexual violence. Globally, one in three women will encounter gender-based violence in their lifetime. The Episcopal Church, represented at CSW70, advocated for marginalized women and girls, seeking to increase their access to resources and decision-making, eliminate gender-based violence, and address climate change.

CSW69/Beijing+30 underscored the urgent need for continued action and progress towards gender equality and women's rights. The event concluded with a closing prayer, including the Beijing Noonday Prayer, co-authored by Episcopalians and other faith partners. As the world marks 30 years since the Beijing Declaration, the challenges faced by women and girls remain significant, necessitating ongoing commitment and effort from individuals, communities, and governments alike.
