Two family members collaborating in their academic pursuits

Father-son duo, Sigurður Brynjar Pálsson and Sölvi Steinn Sigurðsson, are honing their carpentry skills at FB's night school. Their shared educational journey has been enjoyable, and their goal is to construct a guesthouse at their family's summerhouse next summer as a team.

Two family members collaborating in their academic pursuits

In a unique blend of old and new, father and son duo, Sigurður and Sölvi, are venturing into the world of carpentry at FB's evening school. The summer project they have lined up is nothing short of impressive – a guest house at their family's summerhouse.

The CEO's Creative Pursuit

"I've always wanted to take on the DIY mantle – be it home maintenance or summerhouse repairs," shares Sigurður, who runs BYKO during the day. His love for hands-on creations dates back to his high school years, where he worked for a construction contractor. But life took a different turn, and he found himself leading a construction company instead.

The Business Student's Building Interest

Sölvi, a 21-year-old business university student, shares his father's enthusiasm for hands-on work. However, carpentry wasn't initially on his agenda. When Sigurður proposed the idea of attending the carpentry course together, Sölvi was hesitant at first. But curiosity got the better of him, and he decided to give it a shot.

A Unique Classroom Dynamic

"It's a perfect fit – switching between books and manual labor," says Sölvi. While finding a balance between the two studies can be challenging, he believes it's all about being organized and approaching it positively.

For Sigurður and Sölvi, learning together has been a cherished experience. "It's a special bond, and we're having a blast," Sölvi adds, while his father agrees. Though the roles often reverse in a parent-childDynamic, in this class, they're on the same level, collaborating as co-students towards the same goal.

Learning Beyond the Books

Besides being fun, the carpentry course has been challenging for Sigurður, particularly with mastering three-dimensional thinking. It's been a learning curve, but one that has opened up a new perspective on building projects.

Sölvi, on the other hand, was surprised by the course's versatility. "It suits everyone—no prior knowledge or experience is required," he says.

Future Benefits

In the fall of 2023, the pair will graduate. Sigurður plans to complete his bachelor's and potentially pursue a Master's degree. Despite the additional education, he's confident it will be beneficial for his current role at BYKO, where the clients often deal with construction projects.

For Sölvi, this carpentry knowledge will be useful in the future—whether it's to aid in construction projects at work or build his own house. Though he doesn't plan to work in carpentry, he acknowledges that opportunities can change.

And there may be more than just practical benefits for these carpentry students. As Sölvi candidly puts it, "Who knows? 'Fathers on tour' could take off one day."

  1. "Sigurður, who shares his opinion about DIY projects, states, 'I've always wanted to take on the DIY mantle – be it home maintenance or summerhouse repairs,' reflecting his lifelong passion for hands-on creations."
  2. "In a surprising twist, Sölvi, a business-focused student, sought advice from his father and decided to attend the carpentry course, leading him to express interest in a lifestyle that combines business studies and hands-on work."
  3. "Family-dynamics shift as Sigurður and Sölvi, despite traditional roles, find themselves in the same position as co-students, learning carpentry together and creating a unique bond."
  4. "Education-and-self-development extend beyond the classroom for both Sigurður and Sölvi, as they learn technical skills like three-dimensional thinking and carpentry, each finding value in these lessons for their respective futures."
  5. "By autumn of 2023, these students will graduate, with Sigurður looking forward to using the lessons learned in carpentry to improve his role at BYKO, and Sölvi anticipating useful knowledge for both professional and personal endeavors – possibly including the creation of a dynamic 'Fathers on tour' venture in their future relationships."
