On a recent visit to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), President Abdullah Gul of Turkey was treated to a demonstration of the Institute's groundbreaking research and educational initiatives.

The visit, which took place on a Friday, began with a presentation by MIT Vice President Claude Canizares. Canizares provided an overview of MIT's aims and activities, setting the stage for the day's events.

During his tour, President Gul was particularly interested in the Media Lab's projects. He asked questions about the development time and potential compatibility of an electric vehicle for urban mobility that was showcased. The Media Lab, known for its innovative projects, displayed various works, including LEGOs for urban system modeling, compact urban living spaces, urban farming modules, and new computer interfaces.

Mitchel Resnick, a professor at MIT's Media Lab, gave a demonstration of educational tools. President Gul was also presented with a gift on behalf of MIT president L. Rafael Reif by Bernd Widdig, MIT's director of international affairs. Widdig noted that President Gul was impressed by the strong presence of Turkish members in the MIT community, including students, postdocs, and faculty members born in Turkey.

Despite media reports suggesting a partnership between MIT and Sabanci University in Istanbul related to President Abdullah Gul’s visit, our research found no publicly documented evidence to support this claim. However, it is worth noting that Sabanci University, an innovative research and educational institution in Istanbul, has many projects and global partnerships. A notable partnership between Sabanci University and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) focuses on practical projects like earthquake resilience in Istanbul.

Bernd Widdig said, "We're glad we could show the president the 'mens et manus' spirit of MIT," referring to the Institute's motto of "mind and hand." The visit certainly demonstrated the active, ongoing relationship between Turkey and MIT.
