In the bustling city of Atlanta, the demand for skilled welders is on the rise, with various industries, including trucking, automotive, airlines, construction, and the railroad industry, in desperate need of qualified professionals. This shortage of trained welders has created a high-need trade with a high reward.

The Atlanta Technical College is currently offering fully booked welder courses starting mid-October, a testament to the growing demand for these essential workers. However, for those who missed out on the upcoming sessions, there's hope yet. The City of Refuge Program, in partnership with Norfolk Southern's Director of Technical Training, Jason Myers, is also offering training opportunities.

John McQueen, the City of Refuge Program recruiter, shares an optimistic outlook for those embarking on this career path. With experience, welders can potentially earn up to $50 an hour within three to four years, making it an attractive prospect for many.

The City of Refuge Program's welding class is predominantly hands-on, with students starting at their welding stations by 9:00 AM. The class is intensive, with 7 hours a day, 5 days a week, ensuring students receive comprehensive training.

Graduates of the program, such as Altedrius Evans, are eager to start their careers as welders. Evans, who is one of the graduates from the program, feels that welding is in his blood and that his grandfather, who was also a welder, would be proud.

The next welding class at City of Refuge starts in mid-October and is already full. However, interested individuals can apply for later sessions of the welding program by clicking the provided link.

In addition, City of Refuge is hosting an open house on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 2:30 pm, providing an opportunity for potential students to learn more about the program and the exciting career prospects in welding.

With only 3 trained welders for every 10 retiring, the need for new welders is evident. The high demand and potential for a rewarding career make welding an attractive choice for those seeking a new career path.
