Wiesbaden Launches Digital Skills Courses for Seniors

The Smart City department in Wiesbaden, Germany, is offering a series of digital competency courses tailored for seniors, aimed at promoting digital participation and fostering self-sufficiency in the digital world.

Starting from May 8, these courses will be held weekly at Zukunftswerk, Kirchgasse 6, Luisenforum's second floor. Each session will run from 10:00 to 11:30 and last for 90 minutes.

The courses are designed to alleviate fears of the digital world and impart practical skills. Topics covered include essential functions of your smartphone, WLAN and mobile data explained simply, understanding image symbols, and practicing and deepening communication via WhatsApp. Other topics include getting to know the basics of WhatsApp, finding bus connections and departure times digitally, and creating, deleting, and secure phone calls.

On June 18, the world of apps will be explored, and on July 2, participants will learn how to find bus connections and departure times digitally. The courses will be led by the experienced instructor Kirsten Kelly.

Participants are required to bring their charged smartphone, including SIM card, PIN, and passwords, to actively participate in the course. The participation fee for each course unit is 10 euros per person.

The initiative has received support from the Senior Council's chairperson, Angelika Dortmann, who emphasizes the importance of the courses in helping seniors overcome digital insecurities. Maral Koohestanian, the Smart City department head, also explains the importance of the courses in promoting digital competencies among seniors.
