Thousands of Thuringian Apprentices are Commuters - Thuringia Sees Surge in Young Trainees From Other States

Thuringia experiences a substantial influx of young trainees from other German states, with nearly 2,200 arriving for vocational training. Meanwhile, around 4,200 trainees from Thuringia commute daily to other states for their education, a figure that has grown by about 600 in the last five years.

The majority of incoming trainees come from neighboring states, with Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Bavaria, Hessen, Brandenburg, and North Rhine-Westphalia being the most represented. A notable example is the 29 master craftsmen from these states who received their certificates at a roofing and carpentry school in Lehesten, Thuringia.

Industry, construction, and the automotive sector are the primary destinations for commuting trainees from Thuringia. Burgenlandkreis in Saxony-Anhalt, Zwickau, and Vogtlandkreis in Saxony are the main departure points, while Göttingen in Lower Saxony, Coburg in Franconia, and Hersfeld-Rotenburg in Hesse are popular destinations. Among commuters, young men outnumber women by around 1,000. This trend suggests that young people are willing to traverse county and state borders for quality training opportunities.

The balance of trainees moving to and from Thuringia is unequal, with nearly twice as many leaving for training elsewhere. This indicates young people's willingness to travel longer distances for vocational training in sectors such as industry, car dealerships, workshops, health, and social services.
