Temporary School Road Construction at Elisabethschule Lünen-Brambauer: Initiative to Curb Dangerous Parking and Pick-Up Zones by Imposing a Parent Tax

In a bid to ensure the safety of children on their way to and from school, the city of Dortmund is considering the implementation of school streets, while Lünen has already established a temporary school street as part of a pilot project.

The main concern for authorities is the 'school run' by parents and relatives, which often leads to critical traffic situations near schools. School streets are designated areas where motorized vehicles like cars and motorcycles are not allowed at specific times. This measure aims to eliminate traffic, parked vehicles, dangerous turning maneuvers, and improve visibility for children crossing the street.

From Tuesday, 16 September, motorized vehicles are banned between 07:15 and 08:15 and between 15:00 and 16:00 on 'Zum Karrenbusch 6' street in Lünen-Brambauer, as part of the temporary school street project at the Elisabethschule. The ban does not apply during school holidays.

In Dortmund, police officers from the headquarters have been conducting targeted checks on the school street, focusing on 'parent taxis'. The main objective was to engage with parents or relatives who intended to drive their children to school by car, explain the problem, and raise awareness of associated risks. In cases of detected traffic violations, repressive measures were taken.

Jolanta Bialas, Director of the Traffic Department, emphasized the importance of parents and relatives avoiding using their cars near schools to avoid congestion and dangerous parking and turning maneuvers. By making a conscious decision, parents can contribute to creating a safe environment for students and promote their child's traffic awareness.

This year's European Mobility Week (EMW) from 16 to 22 September will have a particular focus on school mobility management. The city of Lünen has been selected for a pilot project to implement concrete measures on school mobility management. However, no relevant information about the authority involved in the pilot project for establishing a 'temporary school street' in Lünen could be found.

The goal of school mobility management is to make school routes safer, more sustainable, and more independent. It's a package of measures aimed at reducing traffic congestion, promoting alternative modes of transport, and educating children about road safety.

The event was originally reported by Police Dortmund, transmitted via news aktuell. By implementing these measures, authorities hope to create a safer environment for children and promote responsible driving habits among parents and relatives.
