Teachers in Philadelphia Receive Permit for Classroom Access

The Pioneering AI in School Systems (PASS) program, led by co-leaders L. Michael Golden and Betty Chandy, is helping people understand the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on education. This unique program, a partnership between Penn's Graduate School of Education (GSE) and the School District of Philadelphia, began this year and will continue through September.
The PASS program is structured in a tiered manner, catering to the needs of District leadership, school leaders, and educators. Each cohort delves into specific aspects of emerging AI, focusing on building capacities in areas such as governance, policy, oversight, and practical applications.
In August, city teachers raised questions and observations about AI in education. These included helping students find their writing voice, encouraging tech literacy, and teaching kids to rely on friends instead of chatbots. The PASS program aims to navigate the promises and perils of AI in school systems.
The School District of Philadelphia also allows students to securely access AI technologies on district devices. This move reflects the widespread presence of AI in our lives, as asserted by L. Michael Golden - AI is already everywhere.
The PASS program is supported by the Marrazzo Family Foundation. Due to its unique tiered structure, the program is not repeated across the country. However, it has made a significant impact in the city, providing additional programming for teachers.
Betty Chandy, the director for Online Learning at the Graduate School of Education's Catalyst Center, is one of the co-leaders of the PASS program. The program aims to help people understand AI and how to think about it, providing a platform for informed discussions about its role in education.
The identity of the teacher involved in the PASS program at the University of Pennsylvania and the School District of Philadelphia, along with the school year in which she began participating in this program, could not be ascertained from the available information. Regardless, the PASS program continues to be a valuable resource for those seeking to understand and navigate the impact of AI in education.
