California once housed colossal prehistoric creatures: dinosaurs

Venture back in time and delve into California's captivating prehistoric past with these fascinating dinosaur facts, designed for kids!

Key Dinosaur Facts for Kids

🦖 Dinosaurs first appeared approximately 252 million years ago, heralding the onset of the Mesozoic Era.

🦴 A fossil signifies the preserved remnants or imprints of plants or animals that have mineralized over the years.

🥚 Dinosaur fossils can encompass diverse relics like bones, footprints, or even eggs.

🔬 Paleontologists, scientists who analyze fossils to study dinosaurs, constitute a vital profession in learning about these extinct creatures.

🦕 Nearly 700 distinct dinosaur species have been discovered since their reign on Earth.

🦅 Birds are indeed descendants of feathered dinosaurs from millions of years ago.

☄️ All non-flying dinosaurs expired around 66 million years ago, potentially due to a colossal asteroid impact.

California's ancient past: home to towering dinosaurs

Intriguing fossils scattered throughout California suggest that the region, around 75 million to 66 million years ago, was home to dinosaurs during the late Cretaceous Period.

To comprehend this stretch of time:

The Expansive Mesozoic Era: "The Dinosaur Age"

The reign of dinosaurs extended from 252 million to 66 million years ago, a period dubbed the Mesozoic Era or "The Dinosaur Age." The Mesozoic Era can be divided into three distinct periods:

  1. Triassic Period (252 - 201 million years ago): The dawn of the dinosaurs occurred during this initial period.
  2. Jurassic Period (201 - 145 million years ago): Grievous plant-eating dinosaurs, like the Stegosaurus, and highly menacing carnivores, such as Allosaurus, roamed the Earth during this intermediate phase.
  3. Cretaceous Period (145 - 66 million years ago): This final phase hosted some of the most notable dinosaurs, including the Tyrannosaurus Rex and Triceratops.

Unfortunately, the Mesozoic Era ended with a mass-extinction event that annihilated over 70-80% of all plant and animal species on Earth, including all non-flying dinosaurs. Many scientists attribute this mass extinction to a colossal asteroid, measuring around 6 miles in width, barreling into Earth near the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico.

California crowned an official state dinosaur: Augustynolophus Morrisi (Auggie)

The eye-catching Augustynolophus morrisi, or Auggie as you might call it, became California's official state dinosaur in 2017. Auggie belonged to the Hadrosaur family, known for their wide, flat beaks that resembled those of ducks.

Scientists believe Auggie was a herbivore that inhabited central California around 72.1 million years ago.

Journey to the First Dinosaur Discovered in California in 1939

Remarkably, before the 1930s, no dinosaur fossils had been discovered in California. Such findings sparked speculation that dinosaurs may never have set foot on the region.

Resist the temptation to guess which dinosaur species marked the first discovery – you'd be correct if you thought of Auggie! Fossils of the Augustynolophus were unearthed in Fresno County in 1939, thus kick-starting the search for prehistoric creatures that unfurled across California.

Since the discovery of the first dinosaur bones in California, only a handful of dinosaur species have emerged on the scene.

A Select Few Dinosaurs Known to Have Lingered in California

Although scientists conjecture that a broad assortment of dinosaurs dwelt in California millions of years ago, scant fossil evidence supports this claim. This is because the vast majority of California was submerged in ocean during the Age of Dinosaurs.

However, the ancient seascape that characterized California was teeming with extraordinary prehistoric sea creatures.
