Student viciously stabbed to death in school canteen, Ubon Ratchathani
Northeastern Thailand’s Ubon Ratchathani province saw a tragic school incident on Thursday, as a 12-year-old student took the life of a fellow classmate during a vicious altercation at a secondary school in Phibun Mangsahan district.
The appalling incident unfolded during the school lunch break, sending shockwaves through the local community and sparking concerns about the adequacy of safety protocols in educational institutions.
According to police accounts, the dispute between the two Matthayom 1 (grade 7) students, who had a previous history of conflict, escalated near the school canteen at approximately 12.30pm. Witnesses claim the suspect approached the victim while he was conversing with friends, produced a hidden knife, and inflicted a stab wound on the victim's left abdomen.
As the victim attempted to flee towards the kitchen area, the suspect pursued him and delivered a fatal stab wound to the neck. Despite the victim begging for mercy, the attack continued until bystanders intervened and restrained the assailant, as stated by witnesses.
The injured student was immediately taken to Phibun Mangsahan Hospital, but tragically succumbed to his injuries.
In the aftermath of the incident, the suspect was escorted by officers to the scene to reconstruct the events for his confession.
The secretary-general of the Office of the Basic Education Commission (Obec), Thanu Wongchinda, raised severe criticism towards the school's failure to enforce safety measures, specifically singling out the lack of routine bag checks.
Mr. Wongchinda underscored the ministry's guideline for schools to implement regular security screenings, asserting that the school's negligence had allowed a weapon to be introduced onto the premises.
Preliminary investigations revealed a history of conflicts between the two students, dating back to their primary school days. However, their reunion at the same secondary school revived their animosity, culminating in the deadly confrontation.
Health services and authorities are now addressing the emotional needs of the affected families and school community. Mental health support is being provided to help coping with the catastrophic event.
Although classified as a personal dispute rather than a broader security threat, officials underlined the importance of maintaining a safe school environment. Simultaneously, they urged schools across the country to reinforce safety protocols to avert similar incidents.
