In a chilling reminder of the global threat posed by online sextortion, a middle school student in Stony Point, New York, was recently arrested in an online sextortion plot. The case, which has been under investigation for several months, underscores the urgent need for increased awareness and action against this insidious online threat.

The arrest was the culmination of a months-long investigation by local police, and the suspect, a juvenile male, was taken into custody in June. However, charges were not filed until last week due to the ongoing investigation. The name of the suspect has not been publicly disclosed, but the Stony Point Police Department has emphasized the importance of community support and open dialogue between parents and children regarding the dangers of online sextortion.

This is not an isolated incident. Over 13,000 reports of online sexual extortion of minors were received by the FBI from October 2021 to March 2023, highlighting the alarming scale of the problem. In fact, online sextortion is a global problem fuelled by social media, according to police officials.

The case in Stony Point involved male students who believed they were exchanging photos with a female on social media, but were actually communicating with a male student who then demanded money and threatened to distribute the explicit images. This is a disturbing trend that has been observed in numerous cases across the globe.

Tragically, the issue of online sexual extortion has claimed lives. In Michigan, Jordan DeMay, a teenager, took his life in 2022 after being threatened by Nigerian scammers. In Wisconsin, Bradyn Bohn, a 15-year-old, died by suicide after falling victim to online sexual extortion. In tribute to Bradyn, Wisconsin lawmakers recently passed Bradyn's Law, which establishes online sexual extortion as a new crime and imposes severe penalties.

The tragic cases of Jordan and Bradyn have prompted calls for louder voices against the issue of online sexual extortion. Bradyn's mother, Brittany Byrd, urged for louder voices in a press conference earlier this year. Similarly, Jennifer DeMay, Jordan's mother, shared her pain about what her son went through in 2023.

In response to these tragedies, the Stony Point Police Department has emphasized the importance of creating safe, judgment-free environments where children feel comfortable reporting concerns about online sextortion. The department also urges any potential victims to reach out to Det. Kryger.

To further address the issue, the Stony Point Police Department, in collaboration with local law enforcement and the North Rockland Central School District, plans to host a community forum at Fieldstone Middle School to provide resources on online sextortion awareness. This is a crucial step towards ensuring the safety of our children in the digital age.

The FBI issued a warning in January 2024 about the growing threat of online sexual extortion of minors. As we navigate the complexities of the digital world, it is essential that we remain vigilant and proactive in protecting our children from these insidious online threats.
