Sheinbaum acknowledges Osmar Olvera and Singapore champions as significant representations of youth
Mexico City, August 6 - In a historic win at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships held in Singapore, 21-year-old Mexican diver Osmar Olvera claimed the gold medal in the men's 3-meter springboard, ending China's long-standing dominance in this event since 2007.
Olvera, from Mexico City, scored an impressive 529.55 points over six dives, surpassing top Chinese competitors like Cao Yuan and Wang Zongyuan. His victory marked only Mexico's third gold medal in World Championship diving history, joining Paola Espinosa's 2009 gold and Olvera's own 2024 gold.
Olvera's achievements in diving are significant. He previously won the 1-meter springboard gold at the 2024 World Championships in Doha and has accumulated eight career World Championship medals, including four during competitions in Singapore. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, he also won a bronze medal on the 3-meter springboard and a silver in synchronized springboard.
President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo met with the medalists of the aquatic games in Singapore, including Osmar Olvera, on Tuesday at the National Palace. Sheinbaum Pardo praised the work of Rommel Pacheco, the head of the National Commission for Physical Culture and Sport (CONADE), and discussed what is needed to bring more medals to Mexico and the support for those who train them.
Sheinbaum Pardo stated that Rommel's work is not just about economic support but also about ensuring athletes attend more competitions and gain more experience. The president did not provide details about the support for those who train the athletes or the talks in schools.
The president noted that the divers are a symbol and reference for many young people in Mexico. Sheinbaum Pardo expressed that the divers feel the greatness of Mexico in their hearts and assured that the medalists are an example for Mexican youth. The press conference took place at the National Palace on Wednesday, August 6.
The conversation between the president and the divers was described as "very nice." Sheinbaum Pardo declared that Rommel's work is historic and very good. The President and the divers agreed to give talks in secondary schools and high schools during their breaks.
Olvera's triumph represents a breakthrough for Mexican diving on the world stage, showcasing his skill and resilience by overcoming a difficult third dive and surging late to secure the win against some of the sport's most elite divers. This success brought him notable national recognition, including commendations from Mexico City's government leadership.
