Senator Durbin Declines Chicago Archdiocese's Lifetime Achievement Award Amidst Abortion Stance Dispute
Senator Dick Durbin, D-Ill., has declined a 'Lifetime Achievement Award' from the Chicago Archdiocese. The decision follows opposition from several Catholic bishops, who cited Durbin's stance on abortion as a reason for their disapproval.
Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, the Chicago archbishop, initially intended to honour Durbin for his work on immigration reform and support for immigrants. However, he faced massive criticism and eventually announced Durbin's decision not to receive the award on Sept. 30.
Bishop Thomas J. Paprocki of Springfield, Illinois, had previously stated that presenting the award to Durbin would violate the US Conference of Catholic Bishops' and the Archdiocese of Chicago's policies. Bishop Michael F. Burbidge of Arlington, Virginia, responded to the situation, stressing the importance of a conversion of heart and mind for productive dialogue on moral issues. Bishop Burbidge also emphasized the need for the church to boldly proclaim the Gospel of Life in its entirety, including challenging teachings and avoiding scandal.
Durbin's decision to decline the award comes at the start of Respect Life Month, as noted by Bishop Paprocki. Pope Leo XIV commented on the situation, stating he was not familiar with the particular case but emphasized the importance of considering a senator's overall work and the complexity of ethical issues. Despite the controversy, Cardinal Cupich emphasized the need for unity within the Catholic community and the promotion of the church's teachings as a whole.
