School on Kolmstrasse, named "Magical Garden," resists budget reductions or cuts

The popular "Magic Garden" in Stotteritz, a unique nature pedagogical haven in Leipzig, faces an uncertain future due to the city's plans for a new school and substation on Kolmstraße. Parts of the "Magic Garden" may be affected by the construction, with at least a "nature experience area" being retained on the future school grounds.

The Columbus Junior e.V., the organisation that operates the "Magic Garden", is opposing the school construction. The citizens had expressed a wish to completely preserve the "Magic Garden", but the city planning department does not see a possibility of sparing the garden due to urgent demands for school capacities.

The planned school would require a change in the existing building plan on Kolmstraße, known as Building Plan No. 444. The public participation for this plan is currently ongoing and runs until Thursday, August 21. Matthias Ruß, a spokesperson for the "Magic Garden", encourages as many people as possible to participate in the process.

The "Magic Garden" provides a unique nature experience area in Leipzig, and its long-term existence is threatened by the school construction. The garden relies on central infrastructures such as access, water connection, workshop, and storage areas, which may be lost if the garden is not spared.

However, there are multiple uses in the school and on public areas that have been found as a future perspective for the "Magic Garden". Matthias Ruß finds this insufficient and hopes for participation from affected parties and residents to ensure the preservation of the "Magic Garden" in its entirety.

For those interested in participating, the corresponding page can be found here. The city planning department does not currently provide details on Building Plan No. 444 or its impact on the "Magic Garden", but more information may be found on the Leipzig city planning office website or local government announcements.

It is crucial that the community comes together to ensure the preservation of this valuable green space in the heart of Leipzig. Join the public participation process today and help secure the future of the "Magic Garden".
