School Closures due to Diphtheria Epidemic Causing Mass Child Deaths in Imo Schools

A devastating diphtheria outbreak has struck the Mbutu Community in the Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area (LGA) of Imo State, resulting in multiple child fatalities and an urgent school closure in the vicinity.

Confirming the outbreak on May 26, 2025, the Chairman of Aboh Mbaise LGA, Iheukwumere Alaribe, stated that an exact death toll could not yet be verified.

Diphtheria, a highly contagious illness caused by the toxin-producing bacterium Corynebacterium diphtheriae, primarily affects the nasal passages and throat but can also impact the skin. The disease is transmitted through respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing or direct contact with infected persons or contaminated surfaces.

The local government has taken prompt action to combat the outbreak's spread. Schools in Mbutu have temporarily closed, and parents have been urged to keep their children indoors to minimize exposure.

An isolation center has been set up at Mbutu Health Centre to handle cases and provide care for affected families, with health workers deployed to quarantine those who may have been exposed to the disease. The World Health Organisation (WHO), the Department of Disease Prevention and Control in the Imo State Ministry of Health, and local health workers from Aboh Mbaise LGA are collaborating to examine and curtail the outbreak.

Parents who haven't yet vaccinated their children have been strongly encouraged to do so without delay, as vaccinations are essential for preventing the spread of diseases and safeguarding children's health.

The public is advised to remain calm and cooperate with health authorities as relevant information becomes available.

In a separate development, two children lost their lives to diphtheria in the Tukur-Tukur community, Zaria, Kaduna State, during the initial week of May. Health officials have underscored the significance of regular vaccinations to shield children from preventable diseases like diphtheria.

According to reports, Nigeria has documented 25,812 confirmed diphtheria cases out of 42,642 suspected instances across 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, and 350 local government areas, with confirmed cases distributed among 184 LGAs in 26 states. As of March 9, 2025, the outbreak has led to 1,319 fatalities based on the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention's most recent situation report, which covers week 19 of 2022 to week 10 of 2025.
