School arrests in Alexandria significantly decrease, as per the latest quarterly figures
In a positive development for Alexandria City Public Schools, the latest quarterly safety report reveals a significant decrease in student arrests and incidents. Compiled by the Office of Safety and Security Services, this is the eighth such report.
The report, to be presented to the School Board on Thursday at 6 p.m. at 1340 Braddock Place, shows a 59% decrease in student arrests and court referrals from the 2023-24 school year to the 2024-25 school year, with a total of 28 cases.
High schools accounted for 11 of the 14 arrests and court referrals during the third and fourth quarters, while middle schools had 3. Notably, no elementary or K-8 students were arrested or referred to court during this period.
Elementary schools recorded the highest number of total incidents during the third and fourth quarters, with 101. However, this is a marked decrease from the previous semesters, where middle schools recorded 23-25 arrests and referrals per semester. This year, middle schools had just 4 total cases. High schools dropped from varying levels in previous semesters to 10-11 total cases this year.
The report also highlights a decrease in threats involving verbal, cyber, or social media. There was a significant drop of 13 cases compared to the previous quarter. Missing student reports also decreased by 6 cases.
On the issue of safety incidents, fights and assaults led all incident categories with 83 cases during the winter and spring quarters. Emergency medical assistance calls increased by 15 cases compared to the previous quarter.
The district confiscated 8 weapons during the period, including 6 knives, 1 stun gun, and 1 can of pepper spray. Alexandria Police responded to 124 calls for service during the quarter, not solely for criminal incidents but also for assistance with missing student investigations, suspicious activity, and welfare checks.
The name of the person presenting the safety data to the school board on Thursday before 6 PM is not publicly available. However, the data presented in the report paints a picture of a safer school environment for the students of Alexandria City Public Schools.
