Nothing's gonna stop us now!

In the wake of a horrific inferno at two schools in Erkrath, neighboring Düsseldorf, the city finds itself in a tight spot, scrambling to provide new classrooms for around 1,200 students on the fly. Theeducational institutions in question - a secondary school and a high school - will get a thorough inspection to determine suitable locations for the resumption of in-person learning.

As of this Friday, students from both schools will partake in online classes. They'll have the chance to connect and discuss the unfortunate events that went down on Thursday. The format and location of this virtual meeting will be customized for each class or grade level. Despite the main school escaping the flames, it will need some tender love and care before the students return. So, distance learning kicks off for those students from Thursday onwards.

No Abitur Exam Cancellations

The high school at Neandertal will lend its premises for the upcoming Abitur exam on Friday, according to a Regional Government spokesperson. Additionally, the exams following grade 10 will go ahead. The Erkrath fire station will play host to the administrative hubs of the ravaged high school and secondary school, ensuring examinations run smoothly.

The fire went down on Tuesday afternoon, leaving no students on-site and fortunately no major injuries have been reported. Emotions are running high; a thick, ominous cloud of smoke billowed skyward. The city now assumes the two schools are a total loss. According to the Regional Government, classes were not being held in any of the three affected schools on Wednesday. School and club sports in the adjacent sports halls and nearby sports fields were also put on hold until Sunday.

Emergency Closure of Children's Facilities

On Wednesday, six children's and youth facilities were temporarily shut down, including numerous kindergartens. Their locations link them to an area where smoke and soot particles might have been drawn in. Parents should be notified through a kindergarten app.

In the immediate aftermath of the fire, citizens were advised to wash off soot residues on balconies or gardens, donning disposable gloves to safeguard themselves against potentially released asbestos. However, the city assures that test results are still under evaluation.

Could it be a Faulty Photovoltaic System?

The precise cause of the fire still remains up in the air. Initial investigations are required to determine if the building can even be accessed, a police spokesperson shared. The city speculates that a technical problem with the photovoltaic system could be the culprit behind this conflagration.

North Rhine-Westphalia's Education Minister, Dorothee Feller (CDU), sent her condolences for the disaster. "It's hard to express what losing a familiar institution for learning, living, and community means," she stated. "Every effort will be made to ensure that regular classes resume shortly, and all final exams proceed according to plan."

  1. In an effort to accommodate the displaced students, the city is considering implementing community policyfocused on vocational training programs as a temporary solution during the school reconstruction process.
  2. As a part of general news coverage, several media outlets are reporting on the ongoing investigation of the school fire, including the potential link between the blaze and the school's photovoltaic system, as well as updates on the education-and-self-development of students during this challenging period, such as crime-and-justice related discussions on the virtual platform.
