SBTi Launches Academy to Certify Experts in Science-Based Decarbonization
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has launched the SBTi Academy, an e-learning platform offering certification for professionals in science-based decarbonization. The initiative aims to bridge the skills gap in setting corporate climate targets, responding to increasing global demand for sustainability expertise.
The SBTi Academy provides a seven-part assessment process, covering greenhouse gas accounting, target modelling, and application of SBTi standards. It offers three progression tracks: Onboarding Hub, Practitioners' Hub, and Certification Hub. Upon completion, professionals become 'SBTi Certified Experts' and are listed on the SBTi's new register.
The register serves as a clearer signal of professional standards in a field where advisory services vary widely in quality. Certified experts are expected to play a crucial role in ensuring corporate climate targets withstand scrutiny from regulators, lenders, and shareholders.
The launch of the SBTi Academy and its certification program addresses the sharp skills shortage in corporate emissions target-setting. With global demand for green talent growing twice as fast as supply, the initiative equips professionals at all levels with technical training, supporting companies in their climate transition planning.
