Safaricom Marks 25 Years of Innovation and Sustainability

Safaricom, Kenya's leading telecommunications company, celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. The milestone marks a quarter-century of innovation and commitment to sustainability, with the company's latest report, 'Anchored on Purpose, Accelerating a Digital Future', setting a new standard for corporate transparency and responsibility.

Safaricom's sustainability journey began in 2012 with its first Sustainable Business Report. At a time when Kenyan companies focused primarily on revenue growth and market share, Safaricom stood out by prioritising purpose. The company's Digifarm initiative has since disbursed KSh 945 million in small loans, with a significant portion benefiting women. Additionally, the Spark Fund Accelerator has supported nine early-stage startups.

The company's commitment to diversity and inclusion is evident in its leadership team, where women now make up nearly half the members, and persons with disabilities represent over 3 percent of employees. Safaricom's 'True Value' model quantifies the company's total footprint, both positive and negative, encouraging leadership to ask harder questions about growth and social impact. The 2025 report revealed a True Value of KSh 1.1 trillion, sixteen times the company's financial profit.

Safaricom tracks carbon emissions as diligently as revenue, with recycling rates reaching 99 percent and 830,000 trees planted across eight counties in 2024. The company aligns its operations with nine Sustainable Development Goals and adheres to international standards for disclosure, earning ISO certification for privacy management.

As Safaricom turns twenty-five, it looks beyond measuring impact to deepening it. The company aims to close digital divides and empower rural communities. Its expansion into Ethiopia exports not just digital access, but also the sustainability principles refined over years of reporting. Safaricom's precedent-setting sustainability reporting continues to inspire transparency and responsibility in the region.
