Revised training program towards systemic change announced by NCoS
The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) is currently conducting a three-day workshop in Abuja to review and develop its training curriculum. The event, overseen by the Controller General of the service, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, MFR, mni, aims to strengthen the NCoS's capacity and align with modern correctional demands.
In his welcome address, Olarewaju Amoran, the Head of Training and Staff Development, described the review as a milestone in professionalizing correctional training. Amoran emphasized that the initiative aligns with the Federal Government's correctional reform agenda.
The workshop is attended by senior correctional officers, curriculum specialists, academic consultants, training experts, and retired senior officers of the service. The Deputy Controller General (DCG) in charge of Human Resources, Ado Sale, represented Nwakuche at the event.
The review will prepare officers to meet evolving security and reformation challenges. It will examine existing materials used in NCoS training schools and colleges, with an emphasis on human rights compliance. The integration of artificial intelligence and other digital learning innovations will be part of the review.
The review will also consider intelligence-driven security. It aims to modernize training modules and incorporate global best practices. Nwakuche stated that an effective correctional system is only as strong as the quality of training received by its officers.
The workshop is expected to culminate in a standardized and forward-looking curriculum, serving as a blueprint for officer training across all NCoS institutions nationwide. The curriculum will focus on rehabilitation-focused corrections, aligning with the service's commitment to reform and rehabilitate offenders.
This development was reported by NAN. The Controller General of the service spoke during the opening of the event, reiterating the importance of the workshop in shaping the future of the Nigerian Correctional Service. The workshop series is a significant step towards professionalizing correctional training and ensuring the NCoS is equipped to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
