"Research indicates widespread support for stricter mobile phone regulations in educational institutions"

In a recent study conducted by the Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB) in Wiesbaden, it was found that a majority of adults in Germany favor stricter mobile phone regulations in schools. The survey, which included 1,312 Germans aged 18 and over, revealed that 80% of adults support a mobile phone ban in primary schools, and 95% are against private smartphone use in these institutions.

The study also found that 72% of adults are against the private use of smartphones without explicit lesson integration. Interestingly, a debate on how to regulate private mobile phone use in schools is currently ongoing in Germany, with the state of Hesse recently introducing a mobile phone ban with exceptions at the start of the new school year.

The average minimum age favored for using social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok is 13.5 years, while the average minimum age favored for owning a smartphone is 11.5 years. However, informed respondents favor an average minimum age of 12.0 years for owning a smartphone and 14.0 years for using social media.

The study also examined the influence of informative input on adults' views by comparing different informed subgroups. It was found that respondents who were informed about digital media risks for children and young people favor a minimum age that is on average four months older for owning smartphones and using social media.

A majority of those surveyed believe that schools should promote responsible internet use and meaningful mobile phone use in lessons. The federal states in Germany have differing approaches to this issue, but the study suggests that a comprehensive mobile phone ban for all schools may be supported by 53% of adults.

The findings of this study highlight the growing concern among Germans about the impact of mobile phones and social media on children and young people. As the debate on mobile phone regulations in schools continues, it is clear that a significant number of adults are in favor of stricter regulations to protect the wellbeing of the next generation.
