Young Researchers Compete in Jugend-forscht National Finale at Hamburg Bundeswehr University
The national finale of the competitive research program Jugend forscht has commenced at the Helmut-Schmidt-University of the German Armed Forces in Hamburg. 167 budding talents in mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, and technology are showcasing 112 research projects. These finalists earned their spots through one of the 16 regional qualifiers.
For the initial two days, the young researchers and jury members will be conducting their presentations and discussions privately. However, on Saturday, the public is invited to attend and learn about the research projects.
Highlighted projects at this year's event include a solar-powered electric bike, a retrofittable drive for wheelchairs, software for improved breast cancer detection, and a method for generating diesel fuel using Kolbe electrolysis. On Friday, a MINT campus featuring cutting-edge technology from various sectors like land, sea, air, and cyberspace will open at the Bundeswehr University.
The award ceremony in the seven categories will transpire on Sunday at Lufthansa Technik, with Federal President and Jugend forscht patron Frank-Walter Steinmeier in attendance.
In celebration of the 60th national competition, the patronage was handed over to the Helmut-Schmidt-University of the German Armed Forces this year. Their motto, "Turn questions into answers," emphasizes the event's aim to encourage young researchers to find answers to their scientific inquiries. A total of 10,350 participants submitted 5,664 projects this year.
