Reflection on political division by Billy Jones during his departure
After nearly a decade of service, Assembly Member Billy Jones has announced his departure from the New York State Legislature to take on a new role as the leader of Clinton Community College's Institute for Advanced Manufacturing.
Jones, who began his Assembly career in 2017, represented the 115th district and was known for his focus on issues, people, and collaborations rather than personal attacks. His resignation, effective at the end of August 2025, will trigger a special election to fill his seat.
The political environment that Jones entered in 2017 is not the same as it is now. He has cited the increasing hyperpolarization of politics as a factor in his decision to step down. Incidents that were once unfathomable, such as swastikas being taped to the Albany GOP headquarters, are now simply upsetting but more common.
Jones has taken criticism throughout his career, but he does not want to participate in the current political environment where disagreements are often met with attempts to obliterate the opposing party's persona and personality. He believes that the nastiness and anger in the Assembly are not conducive to getting anything done.
Despite this, Jones has seen many significant changes during his time in office. He has witnessed two governors, two presidents, and the addition of Herbie's Burger to the state Capitol concourse.
Jones is looking forward to spending more time with his family, especially his 12-year-old daughter, who has accompanied him throughout his political career. In his new role at Clinton Community College, he will lead the Institute for Advanced Manufacturing, focusing on education and job creation in the manufacturing sector.
With Jones' departure, the political landscape of the North Country will undergo a significant change. His focus on issues and collaborations will be missed, and his departure serves as a reminder of the importance of civility and respect in politics.
