Rebranding the Music World through Internship Offers
Rising Star in the Music Industry: Madison Dorsett and the Chromatic Brass Collective
Madison Dorsett, a fourth-year music performance major at The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, is making waves in the music industry. Dorsett, who is also completing a music industry minor, is not only an accomplished musician but also an entrepreneur and change-maker.
In 2020, Dorsett, along with a schoolmate, established the first Undergraduate Student Advisory Board at The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music (2020-21). The board was created to bridge communication between faculty and students, particularly in a remote setting. This proactive approach caught the attention of Eileen L. Strempel, the inaugural dean of The Herb Alpert School of Music, who was impressed by Dorsett's entrepreneurial spirit.
One of the goals of the dean's board of advisors is to connect students with opportunities that prepare them for careers in the global music business. This opportunity came in the form of a summer internship at Full Stop Management, a globally renowned management agency that represents artists such as Lizzo, Harry Styles, and Gwen Stefani. Dorsett was selected for this internship, where she oversees day-to-day scheduling and budgeting for various projects.
Dorsett's internship at Full Stop Management is not her only venture in the music industry. She is also an intern with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and serves as the vice president of operations for the Chromatic Brass Collective.
The Chromatic Brass Collective is a community for BIPOC female and gender non-conforming brass players from across the country. Its mission is to provide a sense of belonging for BIPOC women in the music industry. Dorsett developed a proposal for the organization and its operation, with the aim of establishing a "new normal" in the music industry.
Dorsett finds it empowering to have a voice at the table as the only Black, Indigenous, Person of Color within her cohort at Full Stop Management. She hopes that her work with the Chromatic Brass Collective will inspire young BIPOC girls to make an impact in the music industry.
The Chromatic Brass Collective includes UCLA alumni and, according to typical organizational types, seems to be a musical ensemble or collective focused on brass instruments, probably dedicated to performing, promoting, and perhaps educating about brass music. Full Stop Management, on the other hand, likely is a management or talent agency that supports artists or creative professionals, focusing on career development and representation.
As Dorsett prepares to graduate, she plans to continue performing and focus on the non-profit she helped create, the Chromatic Brass Collective. Her ambition is to make a lasting impact in the music industry and inspire future generations of BIPOC musicians.
- Madison Dorsett, through her work with the Chromatic Brass Collective, is not only promoting education-and-self-development for BIPOC female and gender non-conforming brass players but also advocating for entertainment that encourages inclusion in the music industry.
- In addition to her busy schedule at Full Stop Management, where she works on day-to-day scheduling and budgeting for various projects, Madison Dorsett finds time to unwind by listening to music, highlighting her enduring passion for the art form that brought her into the entertainment industry.
