21st Junior Ranger Camp in Brandenburg Emphasizes Water, Wilderness, and Sustainability
The 21st edition of the Junior Ranger Camp, a state-wide event in Brandenburg, Germany, is currently underway in Criewen, Uckermark 1. This year's theme is water, wilderness, and sustainability, with the focus being on raising awareness and promoting understanding of natural resource conservation and environmental stewardship.
Approximately 90 Junior Rangers, aged between 6 and 16, have set up their tents at the Lower Odertal National Park, Brandenburg's only national park and Germany's only floodplain national park 2. The children and young people are wearing caps and T-shirts as their 'uniform' for the camp, which bears a nature conservation logo.
The Junior Rangers engage in various activities throughout the camp, including venturing out with experienced rangers to learn about local species and habitats, building mini-rafts, dragon boat rides, and gathering herbs for dinner. Britta Schmidt, head of Brandenburg's Nature Watch, oversees the camp. She stated that their rangers care for more than 260 children in 25 groups. Thirty-three of the 90 children at the camp are first-timers, eager to learn and contribute to the camp's objectives.
