Rotary Schools' Educational Kits Investigate Microfiber Cleaning Cloths and Diaper Absorption

The Amsterdam Rotary Club, in collaboration with EndPlasticSoup, has developed an educational kit aimed at preventing plastic waste in the environment. The Düsseldorf-Nordrhein and Neuss Rotary Clubs have taken over the project, with Awista joining as a partner to extend its reach.

Seventy primary and secondary schools have already applied for the kits, scheduled for distribution in September. Dominique Metz, president of the Rotary Club Düsseldorf-Nordrhein, plans to attract more schools through a poster campaign on Awista vehicles. The Rotary Club will cover the cost of the kit, with a budget of 20,000 euros allocated for this purpose.

The contents of the educational kits are tailored to the age of the students, with different equipment provided for primary, secondary, and upper secondary school levels. This allows teachers to seamlessly incorporate the kit into their science, chemistry, and biology lessons. Learning materials are available for download online, and additional information can be requested. The kits' content was developed by the University of Osnabrück, and production is handled by Lebenshilfe Nordhorn.

Microfiber cleaning cloths and diapers are two subjects of interest that can be explored using the experiments included in the educational kits. Microfiber cloths are renowned for their efficient cleaning and minimal residue, while diapers absorb liquids due to their composition, primarily superabsorbent polymers (SAPs). These SAPs expand when they come into contact with water, forming a gel-like substance that retains liquid and prevents leakage.

Awista is supporting the project by promoting it through posters on their vehicles until the end of August. The posters depict a sea turtle encountering a plastic bag in the water, with the caption, "Together against the pollution of the seas." Awista aims to raise awareness of the impact of plastic waste on the environment.

Interested schools can obtain the educational kits by sending an email to [email protected], specifying the intended grade level and providing a contact person's name and address. More information about the educational kits can be found at the provided link.
