Prize for Outstanding Political Thought in 2025 Given to Seyla Benhabib (Hannah Arendt)

The Hannah Arendt Association for Political Philosophy e.V. has announced that internationally renowned political philosopher and theorist, Seyla Benhabib, will be the recipient of the Hannah Arendt Prize for Political Thought 2025.

Born in Istanbul in 1950, Seyla Benhabib of Sephardic-Turkish descent has made significant contributions to contemporary political theory. Her unique approach, which combines critical theory, feminist theory, cosmopolitanism, and the thought of Hannah Arendt, has proven to be both distinct and influential.

Seyla Benhabib's theoretical analyses address some of the central political challenges of our time, including migration, feminism, political belonging, and international conflicts. Her work is published in Germany by Suhrkamp, and she has taught at prestigious institutions such as Harvard University, the New School for Social Research, and Yale University.

Following her retirement, Seyla Benhabib conducted research at Columbia Law School in New York. Beyond her scholarly work, she actively engages in public debates, emphasizing nuanced perspectives where others risk polarization.

The international jury for the Hannah Arendt Prize for Political Thought 2025 includes Filipp Dzyadko, Alexander Estis, Waltraud Meints-Stender (the chairwoman of the association, who can be contacted at [email protected]), Ronya Othmann, Cristina Sánchez, Facundo Vega, and Klaus Wolschner.

The award ceremony will take place at Bremen City Hall on December 9, 2025. The prize, endowed with €10,000, is presented by the Hannah Arendt Association for Political Thought e.V., with funding provided by the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen and the Heinrich Böll Foundations at both the federal level and in Bremen.
