"Pier-side Discussion: Addressing the Young Generation"
Alec Loorz, a 13-year-old environmental activist from Ventura, California, recently spent a day at Scripps, a renowned research institution, as part of a mentoring and fun-filled experience focused on his mission to combat global warming.
Inspired by Al Gore's documentary "An Inconvenient Truth," Alec developed a passion for addressing climate change. He was initially sceptical about the documentary, but it opened his eyes to the importance of global warming. This newfound understanding led him to create his own version of Al Gore's famed slideshow, which he shares with classmates and friends.
During his visit to Scripps, Alec was given a private lab tour by climate scientist Jeff Severinghaus and Lisa Shaffer, the assistant director of program development and international relations. Shaffer, a trained Gore slideshow presenter, showed Alec her version of the slideshow.
One of the highlights of Alec's day was viewing four-million-year-old microscopic fossils in paleobiologist Dick Norris's lab. He also had a personal tour of Birch Aquarium's climate change exhibit, led by Debbie Zmarzly.
Alec's day at Scripps further solidified his commitment to fighting global warming. He wrote in his blog that the experience made the issue more real for him. His self-proclaimed mission is to prepare the youth of America to take control of the planet's future.
To achieve this, Alec has developed a website, kids-vs-global-warming.com, to create a forum for kids to learn about global warming and make a difference. He hopes that by starting to act now, he and other young people will be better prepared to address global warming when they are older.
Alec's visit to Scripps is just one of the many steps he has taken in his mission to raise awareness about climate change among youth. His efforts have been recognised, and he is known as a prominent figure in the fight against global warming.
Alec Loorz, having been inspired by Al Gore's climate science in "An Inconvenient Truth," continues to advance his self-proclaimed mission to combat climate change. His visit to Scripps, a renowned research institution, provided him with valuable insights in environmental-science, strengthening his resolve. Through kids-vs-global-warming.com, he fosters learning about climate-change among youth, believing that education-and-self-development is key in the fight against global warming.
