Osnabrück Celebrates Peace with Annual Hobby Horse Procession

Osnabrück is set to celebrate the annual Hobby Lobby event, a hobby horse riding procession commemorating the Peace of Westphalia. The tradition, dating back to 1650, sees children riding hobby horses to promote peace and tolerance. This year's event kicks off on Thursday, October 9, at 5:30 PM.

The procession begins at the cathedral school's yard, led by the mayor. Children, riding their handmade hobby horses, sing 'We riders ride through Osnabrück and sing for peace' to mark the start. The procession then winds through the city center, ending at the town hall steps where children receive pretzels from the mayor and helpers.

The event concludes with a colorful program on the market square, featuring fire juggling, a theater performance, joint singing, and a light show. This year's celebration is organized by the city of Osnabrück, which has maintained this tradition since 1953. The event has evolved into a well-known children's festival, teaching youngsters about the importance of peace and tolerance.

The Steckenpferdreiten event in Osnabrück serves as a reminder of the city's role in the Peace of Westphalia and its commitment to promoting peace and understanding. This year's event, like those before it, promises to be a joyous and meaningful celebration for both participants and spectators alike.
