Introducing VietNEST: A Revolutionary Tool for Preserving Vietnamese Language and Culture Among Overseas Children
In a bid to address the declining proficiency of the Vietnamese language among children of Vietnamese origin in Australia, a groundbreaking project known as VietNEST (Vietnamese Nurturing Education for Science & Traditions) is set to be officially released in November 2025.
VietNEST is a mobile app and digital platform designed for Vietnamese language learning among children aged 5-15. Developed through a partnership between the Vietnam-Australia Scholars and Experts Association (VASEA), VietSchool in Sydney, and funded by the ASIF Foundation, this innovative tool aims to preserve both the Vietnamese language and culture among the diaspora.
The platform uses interactive, AI-powered lessons that incorporate speech recognition, adaptive learning, and game-based exercises to enhance engagement and effectiveness. A unique feature, Funbox, allows students to record responses, receive AI feedback, and even transform their voices into character voices.
The goal of VietNEST is threefold: to strengthen language skills, promote cultural exchange, and instil pride in Vietnamese heritage. With fewer than 14% of Vietnamese-origin children in Australia having a strong command of their mother tongue, and only 36% of families maintaining Vietnamese-speaking environments at home, the need for such a resource is evident.
VietNEST is a free resource for Vietnamese families and community schools in Australia. Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyễn Mạnh Cường and Nguyễn Thanh Tùng, the Vietnamese Consul General in Sydney, have publicly expressed their support for the initiative, noting its potential to sustain linguistic and cultural heritage among the overseas Vietnamese community.
The ASIF Foundation, a charity operating in both Australia and Việt Nam, provides funding for the project. The our website-Australia Scholars and Experts Association (VASEA) partners with VietSchool, a Vietnamese language school in Sydney, to launch VietNEST.
In the broader context, VietNEST is part of Vietnam’s wider effort, supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to promote the Vietnamese language and culture abroad. This initiative is expected to encourage young overseas Vietnamese to engage with their heritage, fostering a sense of pride and identity within the community.
