Financial Report of the Sect Information Office: Questionable Practices Including Exorcisms and Conspiracy Theories - Occult practices and secretive theories exploration

Last year, the Sect-Info counseling center in Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia, dealt with 972 inquiries - similar to the previous year (2023: 1,016). However, only around a quarter of inquiries were made by individuals seeking help on their own accord. The majority of cases were referred by relatives, friends, or state institutions such as youth welfare.

The counselors noticed a surge in religious fundamentalism, with many people or their relatives seeking escape from fundamentalist evangelical churches or religious groups due to oppressive religious rules. Some extreme fundamentalist Christian groups even attributed illnesses or unwanted sexual orientations to demons, using "liberation prayers" or exorcistic rituals as a remedy. Such treatments can cause severe feelings of guilt and inferiority and potentially contribute to the development of depression.

State schools were often seen as a threat by parents adhering to conspiracy theories, believing they were indoctrinating children to obey the government and suppress independent thinking. Many parents went as far as to emigrate with their families to countries like Russia or Paraguay to avoid sending their children to school in Germany. In other cases, families withdrew their children from school under the guise of extended travel.

The report also mentioned the "Kingdom of Germany" association, which was recently banned, as an example of conspiracy beliefs and resistance against the state. It is considered the largest group of so-called Reich citizens and self-administrators.

Questionable and unfounded offers were also detected by the NRW counselors in the coaching scene. Coaches promised instant success, wealth, and financial independence through their courses. After enticing participants with attractive introductory offers, expensive follow-up sessions or training would ensue. Men-only seminars focusing on regaining "masculine energy" to regain control in relationships with women were significant. Some coaches encouraged the release of aggression to maintain "life energy." This led to incidents of sexual misconduct, even rape.

Red flags for coaches offering overarching solutions to a multitude of problems and enforcing confidentiality clauses, locking doors, or confiscating phones during in-person events should be watchful signs, the experts warn.
