NYC Public School Pupils to Enjoy Extended Winter Vacation Next Academic Year

Hey There!

It's already June, can you believe it? Back in January, there was a buzz about NYC public school students getting a longer winter break than usual. Well, the kids' wildest dreams are coming true!

The 2025-26 NYC public school calendar is out, and it reveals a short week on the tail end of the holiday season. Schools will be closed from Wednesday, December 24th to Thursday, January 1st, which means they'll reopen on Friday, January 2nd. However, this would mean a one-day school week for the staff and students.

During the previous holiday season, the DOE school calendar followed the same pattern, expecting students to head to school on Monday, December 23rd, 2024, before break began. To avoid this, Mayor Adams decided to grant December 23rd as a day off, giving staff, students, and their families an extra day to celebrate the winter season together. Looks like this trend is continuing!

The new 2025-26 school calendar, recently released by NYC Public Schools, lists winter recess as Wednesday, December 24th to Friday, January 2nd. The United Federation of Teachers confirmed the news by texting members, "Friday, Jan. 2, is now part of winter break."

While the holiday season is still a ways off, students are undoubtedly keeping one thing on their minds: summer break-here's the timeline for that. To keep them excited, there are still some upcoming days off to look forward to: this Thursday, June 5th for Eid al-Adha and Thursday, June 19th for Juneteenth.

In addition to these breaks, the Summer Rising Program begins on July 2, 2025, and runs through August 15 for grades K-5 or August 8 for grades 6-8. It is closed on Independence Day, July 4, 2025. To get more specific details regarding the 2025-26 calendar, including other holidays and dates, it's best to consult the official NYC DOE calendar or contact your local school.

As the excitement for the longer winter break builds up, one might also consider utilizing the additional days for education-and-self-development, like starting a new book or learning a new skill to beat the winter fever. Furthermore, with the Summer Rising Program commencing in July, it's crucial to remember that there would still be a weekend gap before the program starts, providing an ideal opportunity for a relaxing break before diving into summer learning.
