New member joins the board of Sun Prairie Schools
Sun Prairie Area School District Appoints New Board Member Amidst Challenges
The Sun Prairie Area School District (SPASD) has announced the appointment of Isaac Sung to its Board of Education, following a series of recent challenges, including the arrest of a former dean of students for child pornography.
Isaac Sung was seated on the Board on Tuesday and will serve until the Spring 2026 election. The appointment was made after eight candidates were interviewed by the board for the vacant position, with the district's focus on finding a member who could help guide the district forward.
The former dean of students at Sun Prairie West was arrested and charged for possession of child pornography and exploitation. The incident has raised concerns in the community about how it was handled by the board, with some questioning the details of the incident. SPASD has provided ongoing updates and resources related to the incident on its official website, emphasising safety and well-being as its top priorities.
Dana Ujor, a parent and advocate for student safety, expressed hope that the new member on the board will help implement or enforce policies that have not been addressed. "Safety. We are looking to protect our kids," said Ujor. Community members hope that Sung's appointment will be a step in the right direction.
The district has also acknowledged that earlier this month, the board voted that the district's operations were not compliant with their expectations. The vacant spot on the board was previously held by Dr. Steve Urso, who resigned in July.
In addition to focusing on safety, SPASD has encouraged families to maintain up-to-date contact information and welcomed volunteers to support the schools. The district's commitment to community involvement is evident, despite the recent difficulties.
Isaac Sung's appointment comes at a critical time for the district, as it navigates the aftermath of the former dean's arrest and works to regain the trust of the community. With a renewed focus on policy expectations, enforcement, accountability, and maintaining trust, the district aims to move forward and ensure the safety and well-being of its students.
