New Electric Vehicle Grants to be disclosed to potential buyers before August 11th

The UK Government's Electric Car Grant (ECG) is set to be revealed in the coming weeks, with the official list of eligible electric vehicles (EVs) expected to be published before August 11, 2025. Here's what we know so far about the grant and its eligibility criteria.

The ECG applies to zero-emission electric vehicles priced at £37,000 or under. To qualify, eligible models must meet stringent science-based emissions targets and high manufacturing sustainability standards. The grant is structured in two bands: Band One (the greenest vehicles) will receive up to £3,750, while Band Two vehicles will get £1,500.

Approximately 150 new EV models are available on the market, with roughly a third expected to qualify for the grant. Eligibility encompasses private purchases, personal and business leases, and salary sacrifice schemes. Manufacturers have been able to apply for the ECG program since July 16, 2025, so the final list will be based on those applications.

Some sources suggest that UK-made vehicles or those with higher sustainability in production may have a better chance of qualifying for the ECG, potentially excluding some imports with less green manufacturing processes. However, the Department for Transport has stated that all products are assessed under the same framework for the ECG, and suggestions that British car makers will be treated differently are untrue.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has voiced its disappointment that the ECG will not benefit all manufacturers, but believes the grant "will be a success, as consumers respond to carrots." Some Chinese and South Korean manufacturers, including MG, BYD, and Kia, are expected to be excluded from the ECG, with BYD dismissing the scheme entirely, calling it "stupid" and "too little, too late" from UK ministers.

The Department for Transport is processing applications as fast as manufacturers can file them, and more eligible EVs will be announced shortly after to take into account later applications from brands. Car buyers will be given a list of eligible EVs before the August 11 date so they can purchase at a discounted price. The government has not yet released the official list of eligible EV models, but it is expected to be made public early next month.

Some criticism has arisen due to the government not releasing the list of eligible manufacturers and models from the start, but the DfT has emphasized that the ECG will be a significant step towards promoting the adoption of electric vehicles in the UK. The ECG is expected to help drive the transition to a greener and more sustainable automotive industry, and car buyers will soon have a clearer idea of which EVs qualify for the grant.
