New Children's Book Celebrates Gertrud Osthaus' Legacy
A new children's book, 'Gertrud Osthaus: The Princess of Hohenhof', is set to debut on Tuesday, October 7th. The book, a collaborative effort involving local schools, museums, and foundations, aims to introduce young readers to the significance of Gertrud Osthaus in an engaging and interactive way.
The project began at the Folkwang Music School's arts department, led by Dr. Hella Nocke-Schrepper and Jutta Schmidt. It involved 24 children aged 8 to 15 who developed 60 individual motifs for the book. Under the guidance of Prof. Ralf de Jong, these motifs were combined into a 48-page collaged children's book by Sophie Holzhueter. The book includes short texts providing information about Gertrud Osthaus and explanations of Art Nouveau to give families background knowledge.
The project received support from various sources. The Osthaus Family – Das Kindermuseum Hagen, specifically the Karl Ernst Osthaus-Museum Hagen, played a significant role in funding the project. The museum, dedicated to preserving the cultural heritage of the Osthaus family, actively engages in children and youth work to promote the family's importance in the city's art and museum landscape. Other supporters included KiKuMu - Ulrike Nitschmann Foundation, 150 Projects for the Ruhr Area funding program, and the Association of Friends and Sponsors of the Folkwang Music School Essen e.V.
The children's book 'Gertrud Osthaus: The Princess of Hohenhof' will be presented at the Aula of the Folkwang Music School on October 7th at 5 PM. The book illustrates Gertrud Osthaus' significance for the history of Folkwang through a blend of factual scenes and fictional encounters with modern artists. The project's success reflects the collaborative efforts of local institutions and the community's commitment to preserving and promoting cultural heritage.
