Nepal Set for March 2026 Elections After Oli's Resignation

Nepal's political scene has been volatile, with eight governments since 2015. The latest chapter saw Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli step down in September 2025, following mass protests. Sushila Karki became the interim prime minister, the first woman to hold the office. President Ram Chandra Poudel has now scheduled parliamentary elections for March 5, 2026.

The protests, which began on September 8, were sparked by a social media ban but also underscored deeper issues like corruption and nepotism. The Nepalese military intervened to restore peace after at least 50 people died in clashes with police. Army chief Ashok Raj Sigdel attempted to form a transitional government, but constitutional hurdles delayed the process. The Nepal Bar Association condemned the dissolution of parliament, warning it undermined democratic principles. The parliament building and residences of ministers were targeted, with some ministers publicly humiliated.

With the election date set, Nepal looks towards a democratic resolution. The interim government led by Sushila Karki is tasked with maintaining stability until then. The country awaits a peaceful transfer of power and a return to normalcy.
