MTN Uganda Opens Inclusive ICT Lab at Mvara Secondary School
MTN Uganda has established an inclusive ICT Lab at Mvara Secondary School in Arua City, as part of its Digital Access Project. This initiative aims to bridge the digital divide for learners with special needs, particularly those with visual, hearing, and physical impairments.
The lab is equipped with 10 computers, JAWS screen readers for the visually impaired, Bluetooth speakers, sound amplifiers, antivirus software, printers, scanners, CCTV cameras, and offers a year of free internet access. These assistive technologies enable learners to fully participate in digital education and access information irrespective of their disabilities.
The lab's opening is a symbol of MTN's commitment to addressing educational equity and digital inclusion nationwide. The project is a Shs 1 billion investment, rolling out 11 labs (with nearly half designed for special needs) across Uganda.
The lab serves over 100 learners with special needs, offering them an opportunity to meaningfully engage in the digital economy and education. It supports the integration of ICT into Uganda's new competence-based curriculum, enhancing daily learning activities. The lab also demonstrates a symbolic affirmation that every child belongs in the digital age.
Annet Dilea, the Education Officer for Special Needs, described the ICT Lab as a "gift of dignity and equal opportunity." Asiku Geoffrey, the City Education Officer, stated that the lab serves as a reminder to every child that they have a place in the digital world. Philip Odoi, MTN's Regional Commercial Head for Northern Uganda, emphasized that the lab is more than just technology; it is an opportunity for every learner to succeed, regardless of their ability.
MTN Uganda acknowledged its partners, Sense International Uganda, for their collaboration in this initiative. The lab's opening was also emphasized by Philip Odoi, MTN's Regional Commercial Head for Northern Uganda.
This new inclusive ICT Lab at Mvara Secondary School in Arua City is a flagship example in the West Nile region, reflecting MTN's commitment not just to infrastructure but to promoting inclusivity and providing digital opportunities for all.
