With a surge of 45%, more Novosibirsk students are taking the profile math exam

Schoolkids in Novosibirsk, Russia, are leaning into science subjects for their EGE exams. This news was shared by Vladimir Shchukin, deputy minister of education for the region, during a TASS press conference.

"When it comes to subject choice, we're seeing a considerably noticeable shift compared to past trends this year," he revealed. "The jump in students choosing the profile math exam is more than 45%."

With biology, physics, and chemistry also on the rise among this year's graduates, the interest in foreign languages is dwindling. Back in 2023, SibKray.ru reported that the "mathematical" foundation of the Novosibirsk region was at risk, as the interest in math is waning, and there's a shortage of educators instilling a passion for the subject.

In 2023, 30,092 Novosibirsk schoolkids took the state final exam in math, a jump from 27,738 the previous year. The average score that year was 3.04, with 2,446 students (8.13%) scoring fives. To put this in perspective, 2,476 students (8.93%) received fives in 2022.

As of 2023, 2,028 mathematics teachers were working in educational institutions in the Novosibirsk region, with 140 higher education teachers specializing in advanced mathematics.

Globally, interest in STEM fields is on the rise, aligning with trends seen in major educational hubs like Novosibirsk. The government's focus on STEM education and recognition of its crucial role in economic and technological growth could contribute to the higher number of math test takers compared to foreign language exams in Russia. However, specific statistics for Novosibirsk are scarce at the moment. For more detailed insights into these trends, it's recommended to consult local educational authorities or research reports specific to the Novosibirsk region.
