Moldova's Pro-European Party PAS Wins Big in Parliamentary Election
Moldova's pro-European ruling party, Action and Solidarity (PAS), led by President Maia Sandu, has secured a surprise victory in the parliamentary election. The party won with 50.20% of the vote, defeating the pro-Russian Patriotic Block. This result further solidifies Moldova's orientation towards the EU, with neighbors Romania and Ukraine welcoming the outcome.
The victory is largely attributed to Moldovans living in the EU who supported Sandu's pro-Western course. Despite losing its constitutional majority, PAS will continue to hold more than 50 seats in parliament. The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) praised the election's smooth organization, despite challenges.
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul have pledged support to Moldova on its path to EU accession. President Sandu expressed joy, stating that the path to the EU is now secured. Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov complained about the limited polling stations available for Moldovan citizens living in Russia.
The Moldovan election results have reinforced the country's pro-European stance, with PAS aiming to continue its course towards EU accession. Despite the Patriotic Block's defeat, the Kremlin has expressed discontent with the election process. The EU has pledged support to Moldova as it navigates its political landscape.
