Leave your worries behind and dive into a breathtaking underwater adventure! Stralsund's Sea Museum has opened the doors to its newly redesigned aquarium tour, inviting visitors to explore 31 stunning tanks showcasing marine wonders from around the globe.

For the very first time, students, Manuela Schwesig, the Minister President of the state, and Stralsund's very own Mayor Alexander Badrow, stepped into the vibrant world of blue-spotted rays, marine turtles, and other aquatic creatures.

Divers swam gracefully through the heart of the "Caribbean Reef," the largest tank in the updated exhibit, to celebrate the grand unveiling. The villagers on the other side of the enormous 80 square meter pane—a massive, eight-meter-high pane from Japan—welcomed the guests with cheerful signs illuminated by flashlights.

Representing a Caribbean reef from surface to bottom, the tank boasts artificial corals that can be admired from three different gallery levels. The pane, about half a meter thick, is reinforced and holds incredible 800,000 liters of water. Each individual pane panel weighs 20 tons, hailing all the way from Japan.

The aquarium tour includes 30 new and one renovated tank, showcasing underwater worlds belonging to the coasts of Fiji Islands, Australia, or California. In the Californian kelp forest, colorful anemones swim alongside California horn sharks. Despite the slightly cooler water, sea life in the Hawaii tanks thrive at a balmy 25 degrees.

Up ahead, the "Fiji Islands" tank comes alive with marine creatures, including blue-spotted rays originating from the museum's own breeding. At the end of the tour, visitors are greeted by old friends: the three beloved marine turtles, Frieda, Käthe, and Naila, who have been part of the museum's family for decades.

Previously housed at another location, the Sea Museum, these respected elders are now back in their original home.

The renovation project, jointly funded by the federal and state governments to the tune of 51 million euros, saw the museum's old town address—the oldest location of the German Sea Museum, focusing on tropical seas—undergo significant modernization. Part of the exhibition had already reopened in July 2024, with an impressive 1.4 million liters of water mixed with 45 tons of seawater mixture now coursing through the aquariums.

Mayor Badrow emphasized that Stralsund's Sea Museum is a significant tourist and cultural attraction, drawing visitors in from far and wide. With the final celebration for the overall project still forthcoming in September, there’s no better time to plan your visit!
